Creating my own “Lost Boys Fortress”

Last Fall I picked up some beautiful leaves without a specific purpose in mind. Since I changed the position of my “bed” and single one furniture, I see the space different, bigger and the walls too white and empty. I decided to use those leaves to give it a little bit of something while I come up with a better idea… Or finish to cover the area with more leaves, or flowers or wahever I find nice for my wall!

What do you need?
– Dried leaves
– Duck tape

AND THAT’S IT!

Isn’t it delicious how we can create a better space with so little?

I find relief in natural elements in my room. Add some candles and you have a very relaxing atmosphere!

That’s a nice bag, please come visit us again.

There is something I call the “Murphy’s Shopping Law.” It happens when you’re just about to pay or get out of the store and you spot something that you would definitely get home with you. Sounds familiar? I KNOW! But that’s how I found my new favourite bag.

nas bag

Price: $6 – Store: Value Village

I didn’t find much about this brand other than it was (and is!) a big thing in the 80s. The Korean designer had a very particular style whick makes it kind of easy to identify. Isn’t it lovely? Take a look at other pictures of Nas bags here and judge by yourself. They’re so unique and vibrant, each bag has its own personality! I just love that I found mine.

IMG_1037

I also found a description of the same bag from www.rubylane.com (online vintage shopping community) that says:

This vintage faux leather multi-colored patchwork NAS/Alentino handbag provides a very unique and fun way to carry your stuff. It has a double handle and sports gold colored piping and stitch work around the various patches which mostly have a reptilian look. It has a 17” zipper across the top which opens wide enough to see what you are looking for inside. There is also a small zipper pocket on the inside. The inner durable weight lining is in excellent condition. This is a bag that will compliment many outfits.

Do you know anything about NAS bags? Have you seen one before? If you have any information, please share! ❤

When my interest in thrifting and Vintage started a couple of moons ago, I did some research to educate myself better on the subject and found super useful tips that made my life easier when investing in that wonderful link to the stylized past. That’s why I decided to share those tips with you, based on what I’ve learned through this pleasant experience.

Today’s tip is: “Thank you for visiting, please come visit us again.”

Remember one of the tricks/tips for thrifting is to constantly visit the stores because ( at least you have 7 eyes) you won’t have the time to see it all. Also, they change the inventory all the time, so you will always see new stuff. Just think about it, could you handle the burden of the guilt for missing what could have been the finding of a lifetime? COULD YOU? I can’t even think about it ): But that’s ok, now you know it, and hopefully you’ll put this into practice (:

Best part? FAUX LEATHER! Animal cruelty free, F-YEAH!

So, remember to come back here as well! You can visit anytime (:

Have a brilliant day, whenever you read this ❤

This pop-up shop version of the store in Montreal it’s been in Toronto for a while now, but the time to leave has come and they have this crazy sale to get rid of everything!

Jack Lux Vintage (Montreal) opened a 2nd location in Toronto (pop-up store). Jack Lux has one of the largest vintage collections in Canada much of which was acquired from Centre National du Costume (2005) which was a costuming trust established by the Quebec Government to curate and identify a wide ranging (1920’s – 1990’s) and diverse vintage collection to be used by filmmakers and production houses that were shooting in the province of Quebec. In 2005, the organization was dismantled and Jack Lux was able to acquire the vast collection — which at last count included more than 200, 000 items of men and women’s apparel and accessories.

WHAT: Vintage Shop offering incredible men’s and women’s vintage clothing, shoes and accessories ranging from 1920 – 1990 available at incredible prices.

Chris Murray at the Press Club, Toronto. 10/22/14

When I came to Canada for the second time (2007 I think… I can’t believe it’s been that long), I was visiting my uncle in Montreal, which by the way it is probably one of the best summers of my life!

I love ska (1rst and 2nd wave or nothing!), and that summer the amazing universe gave me a great surprise: Chris Murray was going to play in the city!

… Yes, of course I went. Yes, I had a blast!

I really liked Chris’ music, but it was until I saw him performing live that I truly understood what it was all about! How can a simple tune make us feel things? He knows one thing or two. The truth is, his music is love and joy, the kind of love and joy that sets you free.

When I knew he was coming last year, I was so freaking happy! And when I saw he was coming this year again, I didn’t even think about it. This is the third time that I go to one of his shows and still counting!

“Chris Murray continues to be the North American king of ska playing shows all over the US, Canada and the rest of the world. He continues to collaborate with the bands that uphold the genre (some of the most talented and unknown).”

Introducing Country Suburbans and discovering the ILGWU label!

I’ve never been big blazers fan. I though they were just “not for me,” but since I had to find some pieces to complement my professional look, I decided to do it my way.

Found at Value Village Price: $7.99 <3

One of the things that I like the most about vintage clothing, is that I’ll always feel amazing and confident in whatever I’m wearing.

I never cared about brand names, but I’ve learned that knowledge is a very important thing in the vintage hunting. Why? Because you will enjoy the most out of the shopping experience if you spot a certain brand that was famous when your mother was 21, you’ll be able to tell what decade is that dress from or get excited because of the collar details that marked a tendency in a decade you can only fantasize about, but that you can always bring back with your style! I know, it’s a lot of emotions and I LOVE IT!

Always check the tags: You'll learn a LOT and who knows, it could be your lucky day!

Always check the tags: You’ll learn a LOT and who knows, it could be your lucky day!

So, talking about knowledge, one of the first things that grabbed my attention was the ILGWU label.

“The ILGWU stands for one of the largest labor unions in the United States, one of the first U.S. unions to have a primarily female membership, and a key player in the labor history of the 1920s and 1930s. The letters mean The International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. This label (pictured below) can be found in vintage clothing made in both Canada and the USA. It is a good marker to look for when buying, collecting vintage clothing.”

The letters mean The International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. This label (pictured below) can be found in vintage clothing made in both Canada and the USA. It is a good marker to look for when buying, collecting vintage clothing."

The ILGWU sponsored a contest among its members in the 1970s for an advertising jingle to advocate buying ILGWU-made garments. The Union’s “Look for the Union Label” song went as follows: Look for the union label When you are buying a coat, dress, or blouse, Remember somewhere our union’s sewing, Our wages going to feed the kids and run the house, We work hard, but who’s complaining? Thanks to the ILG, we’re paying our way, So always look for the union label, It says we’re able to make it in the USA!

The History:

The ILGWU was founded in 1900 in New York City by seven local unions, with a few thousand members between them. The union grew rapidly in the next few years but began to stagnate as the conservative leadership favored the interests of skilled workers, such as cutters. This did not sit well with the majority of immigrant workers, particularly Jewish workers with a background in Bundist activities in Tsarist Russia, or with Polish and Italian workers, many of whom had strong socialist and anarchist leanings. They also progressed to become a big business.

In the late twentieth century the rapidly declining ILGWU attempted to organize new immigrant sweat-shop labor and defended the rights of undocumented workers. But the old pattern of collaboration with employers to protect the industry persisted. Indeed, some Hong Kong sweatshops moved to New York in the 1980s and set up as union shops. Former ILGWU officials dominated The Union of Needletrades, Industrial, and Textile Employees, which was formed in 1995 through a merger of the ILGWU with the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union, an old rival based in the men’s clothing industry. UNITE merged with the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union(HERE) in 2004 to create a new union known as UNITE HERE. The two unions that formed UNITE in 1995 represented only 250,000 workers between them, down from the ILGWU’s peak membership of 450,000 in 1969.

I bought my Country Suburbans blazer and never thought about the label. When I found it, I felt like the one who proves that a legend is true.

Next time you’re looking for a treasure, don’t forget to look for the union label! (;

Have an amazing week!

Slip into the Autumn shade…

After maybe 5 years I’m finally going to experience again one of the most beautiful seasons Mother Nature could provide.

My summer was incredible, full of music, knowledge, happiness and love! Now it’s time to open another cycle and welcome the beautiful colours of Autumn, and of course, more experiences that will enrich both mind and soul.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a chameleon! I’m different everyday depending on my mood and what alter-ego lady from the past has possessed my body that day.

I woke up yesterday with a strange feeling of joy in my heart. I decided to let it flow, and I chose a beautiful dress that I was saving for a special occasion, and what could be more special than feeling so happy that you would cry for no reason? Oh yes! I was ridiculously happy, just because.

I bought this treasure at Space Vintage, one of my favourite vintage stores in Toronto (contact info at the bottom). Not only amazing and authentic vintage pieces, you’ll shop like a queen enjoying their fine selection of music (I love that I can always listen to some Rocksteady and first wave of Ska, my favourite!).
You’ll also find beautiful accessories by Macondo, a project brought by a super talented and creative sister from my dear land Venezuela.

Just so you know, I’m the worst model… Actually, let’s pretend I did it on purpose so the focus would be my pretty dress (;

You’ll love it! Go for it… But stay away from that 80’s jacket! Hahaha… No, really.

See you next time my treasure hunters (:

Value Village scores again!

If you go to Brantford and have no much to do, you should definitely go check the Value Village there. It’s not that big, but WOW! Believe me when I say you will find quality and unique vintage items. From pins and earrings, to early 80’s and 90’s vintage clothes.

This time I was looking for some blazers as I finally started my internship (which by the way, I love it) and had nothing decent to wear at all. Turns out I found three amazing pieces including a pearl, but that’s for another post because I didn’t take any pictures of them… And I want you to stay tuned! 😉

However, I found other interesting things that have been on my “must find” list for a while. If I’m happy with my findings? You bet but I’ll win! Just take a look and judge by yourself.

Please ignore my dumb face and the devil manifesting itself through my hair!

Black Turtleneck Top $5

This one is a pearl, or should I say PAIR? (I’m so funny right? Please laugh.)

I was so close to buy a pair of Martens until I saw the price. I decided I was going to find my perfect black shoes with three holes, but I found something SO much better.

Once I was looking through Amazon.com and I read in the comments people complaining about the quality of the shoes/boots. I found out that the Dr. Martens we buy at the shoe stores are manufactured in China and not in England like it used to be, so the quality dropped a lot and I can tell: Last year I bought my burgundy boots and they already started to peel off in some parts. From what I read, these boots used to last for at least 7 years or so.

I was doing some research but I couldn’t find the model this babes. If you have a hint, please let me know! I have a good feeling about it because the material they’re made of is so strong and, you know, different from the rubbery ones we see nowadays.

There is a treasure for everyone, GO AND FIND YOURS!

Lost and found: what would you do?

I took a picture of this sign last winter

IMG_4369.JPG
But it was last week when I decided to find out what happened. Would you like to know the end of the story? Here it goes:

Hi Ariana,

Yours has been the only response I got to that note, so the original owner is still unknown. I’m glad I got some response, though 🙂

Over the moon, blown away, surprised or just happy: how would you feel if someone does the same for you? Small actions that give us the biggest surprises.

For the lesson and the smiles of the people who are reading this inspiring story: THANK YOU, ROBERT!

Walk, ride, roll!

I’ve seen skates like this at one specific vintage store and dreamed a little bit to try them on and join the Roller Derby team… Yes, I dream that much! However, I was walking back home and saw this size 7 beauties around Christie and Bloor.

By the way, if you like going to vintage stores and you live in Toronto or are visiting, you must drop by this amazing place! It’s called 69 Vintage and as soon as I get my camera, I’ll show you one of the most incredible pieces of my wardrobe that I’ve bought from there.

The Really Really Free Market!

My lovely and beautiful friend (also my favourite thrifting partner) Juana told me about it.

I thought it was just about bringing clothes and trading but it’s actually way more than that. What an impressive project. BRAVO!

“Really Really Free Market Toronto West End (at Campbell Park) is a community that provides a collectively organized, non-monetary alternative to the current mainstream economic system. We believe in creating accessible, welcoming spaces where people can meet face to face to share goods, skills and ideas.”

Please feel free to visit their blog to get more information. They even have a guide to create your own community market! Isn’t that awesome? Yes it is, and so this people are.

After the fun, we had a delicious Lunch made by the wonderful ladies in charge of the Community Centre at Campbell Park. The menu? Chicken curry or veggie curry with rice and salad. Dessert? Dates truffles covered with shredded coconut or sesame seeds.

They cook every Sunday. You can go to the park to enjoy some fresh air and have a delicious food. Donations are welcome! They work really hard. They are like wonder women and I’m not exaggerating at all! A small show of gratitude would help to keep this initiative alive. They do it with love, let’s collaborate!

Fun is right at the corner, we just have to get up and go for it!
